"The sculptural work of the Santo Niño santero stands out as the finest in skill and technique among the 19th century folk artists of New Mexico. Most of his pieces are small, between twelve and eighteen inches high. They are delicately carved and carefully painted and perhaps come the closest to academic art within this folk tradition."
