A very fine white jade double-gourd brush washer
18th century
Deeply and crisply hollowed to accommodate the water, the simulated fruit carved from a very even pale pebble, the top issuing a long curling twig forming the handle and with small leaves and tendrils sinuously curling down both sides and all across the underside forming the naturalistic stand. 8cm (3 1/8in) long

Footnotes

  • 十八世紀 白玉雕葫蘆式洗

This brush washer is remarkable not only for the purity of the stone but also for the technical assurance of the carving; the craftsman here seems to relish the opportunity to exhibit his skill in carving the delicate tendrils in an almost flamboyantly naturalistic style, exemplifying the peak of Qing Dynasty jade workmanship. The string-like tendrils (蔓带 mandai) are a pun for 'ten thousand generations' (萬代 wandai).

For a similarly intricately carved double-gourd brush washer, but larger in size, see R.Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, no.100. The present lot is however very small to work well as brushwasher and may in fact have been intended more as a fondling piece for the scholar; see ibid, no.104 for a similar-sized double-gourd brush washer.
