Footnotes

  • 十七世紀 青玉雕饕餮紋雙獸耳碗

Provenance: An English Family Collection of Important Jade Carvings, and thence by descent.

It is very rare to find jade of such astonishing purity, and the simplicity of the form and decoration of this bowl only serves to emphasise its quality. The form is derived from the archaic bronze ritual vessels of ancient China, but unlike many bronzes and their later imitations, often carved with diaper ground and taotie masks, here the sides are intentionally left plain and enhanced only with minimal elegant additions to the handles and a small restrained taotie mask on each side.
