Early 19th century
The head of carved ivory with a queue of natural hair added at the back and wearing a raspberry-coloured silk cap, the hands also of ivory and the body made from a frame of wicker covered in compressed layers of paper and clothed in the silk robes of a court official with all details carefully and realistically reproduced in silk and gold thread, including a rank badge with a bird and bat, painted wood stand. 49cm (19¼in) high (3).

    Figures of this type are more typically known in the medium of painted clay, see four figures given in 1803 to the East India Marine Society, now in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, illustrated by C.L. Crossman in The China Trade: Export Paintings, Furniture, Silver and Other Objects, Princeton, 1972, p.200. Figures with ivory head and hands are rare, but compare a pair of ivory and wood figures, 18th century, from the Rafi Mottahedeh collection, illustrated in the joint exhibition of the Oriental Ceramic Society and the British Museum, Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, London, 1984, pl.135.
