A rare famille rose vase
Shen de tang zhi mark, Daoguang
Brightly decorated on the body in vibrant pink, green, blue, yellow, purple and grey enamels with a continuous scene of five boys playing in a garden, one lighting firecrackers whilst two boys cover their ears with their hands, and two other boys conversing animatedly under a delicately blossoming tree, all between ruyi-head borders at the foot and shoulder, beneath blooming lotus scrolls on a bright pink ground on the neck, between dark red and gilt stylised animal handles on either side, the rim gilt-edged above a band of ruyi-head, the underside with the four-character mark in dark red reserved on the pale turquoise ground.

    The famille rose enamelled wares of the Daoguang period, and in particular those created for the Shen de tang, were renowned for their delicacy. Three related vases with Shen de tang marks are illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl.188-190.

    Compare an almost identical but mirror-image vase, formerly in the Weishaupt Collection, which was sold at Christie's New York, 19 September 2006, lot 419, which may be the pair to the present lot. See also a very similar Daoguang-marked vase, formerly in the Edward T. Chow Collection, sold at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, on 19 May 1981, lot 597.
