Provenance: an English private collection, acquired prior to 1978 and thence by descent. The father of the present owner was stationed in Shanghai in the 1930s with the British Army and it is possible that he obtained the bowl at that time.

A medallion bowl of similar design and colour is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, no.668-1903.
