Footnotes

  • 清乾隆 青玉雕龍紋雙獸耳蓋瓶

Provenance: a European private collection and thence by descent

The present vase, superbly carved in high relief with three five-clawed dragons emerging from swirling and crashing waves to pursue the flaming pearl, is very similar to a smaller (15.7cm high) pale green jade vase and cover from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Beijing, 2008, pl.21. The fine carving of the flaming pearl amidst the cloud scrolls may also be compared to that on a pale grey-green jade 'dragon and phoenix' vase and cover, Qianlong, illustrated by S.H.Hansford in Chinese Carved Jades, London, 1968, pl.87.

Compare a smaller (14.7cm high) white jade 'dragon' vase and cover, variously dated as Qianlong and 19th century, from the collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York, sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 28 November 2006, lot 1412.
