Footnotes

  • 十八世紀早期 掐絲琺瑯雲蝠紋壽字瓶

    Provenance: a Belgian private collection

Bats are a familiar representation of the wish for prosperity, based on the homophone for the character fu, and a multitude of bats multiples such prosperity. The bat design seen on the present piece is exceptionally rare in cloisonné; another example of this design of bats circling a shou character but on a double-gourd vase from the Uldry Collection is illustrated in the catalogue by H.Brinker and A.Lutz, Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, New York, 1989, no.246.
