Footnotes

  • 十八世紀 德化白瓷觀音像 模製「博及漁人」篆書款

Provenance: acquired from John Sparks Ltd., London, on 21 December 1953
A European private collection and thence by descent

The mark of Boji Yuren ([Virtue] extends to all, [even] fishermen) is found according to P.J.Donnelly almost exclusively on figures. The present figure is rare for its modelling with the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin, holding the flask, whereas she is more often modelled holding a ruyi sceptre or a scroll. The combination of the words Guan and Yin translates as 'She who always sees and pays attention to listening'.
