  Emil Nolde began designing a studio and retreat in 1927 in the German town of Seebüll, where the Nolde Stiftung (Foundation) resides today. It would remain his home for the rest of his life and the location would become important factor in his longevity as an artist. After years in Berlin enjoying all that the city had to offer, the artist sought to distance himself from the industrialized world and entered into some of his darker years. For Nolde with the rise to power of the Third Reich came defamation. His art was labeled 'degenerate' and he was prohibited from painting and exhibiting. Nolde was and sustained by the stark, natural beauty of his German homeland and this can be exemplified in many works of 1930s when the present work was painted.
  
  Reetlandschaft und booten offers glimpses of Nolde's masterful use of color. With watercolors the artist often began with moistened Japan paper, which is even more absorbent of pigment. In the present work the sunlight in the orange passages of the background seem to emanate from a central light source towards the edges of the picture.
