A painted pottery model of a lokapala
Tang dynasty
The Buddhist guardian figure bearing a fearsome expression beneath a helmet supporting a large eagle finial, the stalwart deity's muscular frame attired in armor comprised of intricately rendered breastplates, shoulder pads, and leggings, one hand propped on his hip and another upraised presumably at one time supported by a now lost spear or other implement, his feet supported unevenly on the head and hindquarters of a recumbent ox lounging on a small waisted plinth; exterior surfaces covered in gesso and earthen adhesions, the details enhanced in gilt and pigments.
34in (86cm) high
Sold for US$ 6,000 inc. premium
