A massive painted pottery model of a recumbent camel
Tang dynasty
The head of the animal slightly cocked in an engaging expression created by its bulbous eyes, complicated mane, and protruding bifurcated lips above incised tufts of hair at the neck and at each curled front leg, a separately potted full load of rugs, tents and supplies nestled between the beast's protuberant double humps poking through the separately potted saddle immediately in front of the coquettishly curled tail; the exterior surfaces covered in gesso and earthen adhesions with traces of pigment to the saddle, now mounted on a Plexiglas base.
