A cast bronze steamer, xian
Late Shang, early Western Zhou Period
Supported on three powerful legs cast at the shoulders with fierce bovine masks below the waist and tapered upper section set off by a wide band of taotie masks and vertical flanges enclosed by radiating C-commas and horizontal volutes under U-shaped twisted rope handles and fitted with a perforated bronze disc for steam, the upper section and interior exhibiting malachite, cuprite and earthen encrustation.
