A fine eight-panel cinnabar lacquer screen with hardstone overlay
19th century
The massively sectioned rectangular panels overlaid in multi-colored hardstones portraying mythical and historical figures such as Wang Xizhi and his ducks, Shoulao and his deer, Xiwang Mu and her phoenix, other winsome beauties and introspective scholars surrounded by their attendants and animals, all upon the cinnabar ground intricately incised in various geometric patterns to differentiate the topography of an idyllic garden setting; the wood floating panels below carved in raised relief with lively depictions of animals and seasonal flowers and the black lacquered ground of the reverse painted in gilt lacquer with a lengthy calligraphic inscription bearing a date of the Qianlong xinwei year (1751), above further incised wood reserves of seasonal flowers.
