A rare gilt bronze box inset with a white jade plaque
Jiaqing mark, 19th century
Of rectangular form, each side of the upper section similarly decorated with repoussé work depicting bats in flight amidst cloud scrolls against a textured ground, the top with a white jade plaque mounted within a border with chased clouds, the finely shaped jade carved in relief, depicting a scholar and his attendant in a mountainous setting, the base incised with additional cloud scrolls within four raised lingzhi groups at corners in pyramid format, the floral-decorated foot with stylized key-fret edges, the underside with four crisply executed mark reading Jiaqing nian zhi within a raised square.
