The egg-yolk yellow bowl set on a recessed foot encircled by a spreading foot rim, its gently flared side walls narrowing down to a sunken floor, carved on the exterior in high relief depicting animals amongst lush trees issuing from rockwork.

Unlike some other popular colors applied in Chinese glass making which were under European influence, the development of yellow glass was unique to China and has always been of particular Chinese taste. In late imperial China, yellow was reserved for the imperial palaces. Yellow glass came in many tones including egg-yolk yellow, mustard-yellow and lemon-yellow.

Mr. Gadient was a successful businessman who traveled extensively in Asia during the 1970's and 1980's. The Gadients' collection of Chinese glass started in Hong Kong in the early 1970's. Since their first pleasant encounter with fine Chinese glass at Charlotte Horstmann's antique gallery at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, the Gadients have devoted their passion for art collecting on Chinese glass, one of the most intriguing and sophisticated of Chinese art forms.
