A rhinoceros horn libation cup
17th/18th century
The flared cup with handle formed from the trunk of two trees, the foliage extending into the cup with incised clouds throughout the interior rim, the exterior carved with a continuous landscape scene of a rushing river carrying a boat with a single oarsman, the opposing side showing a wandering scholar on a rocky outcrop followed closely behind by an attendant carrying a parcel, the cup supported on a reticulated foot ring formed by the rocky ground; with a reticulated wood stand carved in a motif of millet and lotus above waves.
