A large gilt bronze seal
Qing dynasty, dated 1852
Of square section with a beveled edge and surmounted by a tall pillar-shaped handle surmounted by a fu-lion finial, the front inscribed Shandong, Zilai Hua Tuo gumiao (ancient Hua Tuo temple at Zilai, Shandong), reversed by Xianfeng ernian renzi (in the year of renzi - the second year of the Xianfeng reign) zhishigong zhi, the bottom reading [gui]bao xianshi Hua Tuo (precious pioneer master Hua Tuo) in large seal script.

  • Hua Tuo (c. 140–208) was a highly respected Chinese physician who lived during the late Han Dynasty and Three Kingdoms era. The Sanguo zhi (Records of the Three Kingdoms) and Hou Han shu (Book of the Later Han) record Hua as the first person in China to use anesthesia during surgery.
