Second laureate bust left, IACOBVS.II.DEI.GRATIA, toothed border on both sides, reverse: crowned cruciform shields, seven strings to Irish harp, scepters in angles, date 1687 at top, .MAG.BR.FRA ET.HIB REX. All James II 5 Guineas are rare in high grades. They were the largest gold coins of the era and produced in relatively small quantities - nevertheless they circulated widely during James's short three year reign and beyond. Most available specimens are worn, damaged or mounted. This higher grade specimen is indeed special. Pleasing surfaces with a few tiny scattered abrasions. Deep olive-gold color overall.
