Late 19th century-early 20th century, mounted on a wooden base. An early form of projector invented in the 17th century, magic lanterns were first used by entertainers to create the appearance of ghosts and other supernatural creatures, later they were more widely used to project travel scenes, comic images, and religious and patriotic themes.
