Seymchan Meteorite Slice
Iron Octahedrite, IIE Pallasite
Magadan, Russia
Meteorites are fragments of extraterrestrial bodies (asteroids, planets and moons) made up of nickel-iron alloys and stone silicates. It is believed the Seymchan originated near the core/mantle boundary of a differentiated planetary body, thought to be an asteroid, which was destroyed during the formation of our solar system approximately 5.5 to 6.0 billion years ago. Exhibiting an excellent Widmanstatten pattern (named after Count Alois von Beckh Widmanstatten), the present offering has natural edges showing fusion crust. The pattern, revealed by an acid etching process applied to the iron-nickel surface, is diagnostic of extraterrestrial metal. Measures 24.5 x 21 x 0.25in; weighs 8.4kg (18.6lbs)(62.5cm x 56cm x 1cm)
