Tanzanite
Tanzanite
Samax Mine, Merelani Hills, Arusha, Tanzania
This is an outstanding full miniature specimen that really gives meaning to the phrase "gem crystal"—this is, quite literally, a crystal of gem-rough quality tanzanite. Tanzanite only originates from this unique mineral deposit and is still the only source in the world for gem tanzanite specimens and gem rough. This specimen is unusual in that it is a compound crystal with a fancy termination, cut like glass. The luster on this piece is also like polished glass—very bright and smooth—in a word exceptional. The intensity and color saturation of the crystal is typical of a natural unheated tanzanite (though a simple heat treatment can emphasize the blue saturation and is often done to specimens and almost always done to cut gemstones). The crystals show intense purple color when viewed from the front and, when rotated 90 degrees, they show classic blue color from the side axes. Dichroism is a classic effect for tanzanite and this specimen exhibits it strongly. Pristine and complete all around, this is natural, gem-quality crystal is a competition-level specimen. Weight: 136.0 carats. (27.2 grams). Measures 34.0 x 34.0 x 9.0 cm
