Impressive and Exotic Shiva Lingam
Narmada River, Central Highlands, India
Formed of cryptocrystalline quartz, shiva lingams are typically seen in brown, taupe and reddish colors. Found in the sacred Narmada River, one of the holy sites of India, the villagers gather the stones and hand polish them. At one time they were exclusively limited to the religious use in Hindu temples. The egg shape is considered a phallic symbol of the Hindu god Shiva. The shiva lingam represents male and female, as well as the cosmic egg form from which all creation emerged. The present example has a rare distinctive natural black color. Black shiva lingams are rare and considered very sacred and are thought to contain highly protective energies.
