Carved Jasper Box in the form of a Mushroom
By Paul Dreher
Idar-Oberstein, Germany
Northern European woodland themes are very popular with German lapidaries. This novel study of a mushroom is actually a box--the removable cap of the larger mushroom revealing a hollow core suitable for the storage of secret items. The cap of both mushrooms are formed of polished Brazilian agate, while the underside and stem are carved of an ochre-colored jasper. Completing the scene is a base formed of a large natural cluster of dioptase crystals in matrix, possibly from Kazahkstan, studded with a scattering of rose-cut diamonds, bezel-set in silver. Measures 5 x 5 x 5in
