Aquamarine Carving of a Polar bear
Alfred Zimmerman
Idar-Oberstein, Germany
One of the most renowned lapidary artists of the last several decades, Zimmerman is known for his animal carvings of transparent crystalline minerals. The present example is carved from a single piece of sea greenish-blue aquamarine and evokes an entire Arctic scene of a polar bear on an icy outcropping at sea. The eyes are set with small blue sapphires. What more fitting mineral could be used for this subject matter than sea green aquamarine?
