Peanut Wood Carving of a Lizard
"Peanut Wood" Carving of a Lizard
Gascoyne Region, Australia
Actually a type of agatized wood, "peanut wood" originates in one region in Western Australia. The bold and distinctive pattern is the result of boring worms which drilled through driftwood which was subsequently buried and fossilized. The worm holes, giving the appearance of "peanuts" were filled in with light colored sediments while the wooden areas retained a dark color—the result of organic material being included in the fossil wood. Length 6 1/2in
