Colorless Quartz--A Very Large "Herkimer Diamond"
Ace of Diamonds Mine, Middleville, Herkimer Co., New York
Sparkling quartz crystals from many localities are called "diamonds," but premier among these are the so-called "Herkimer diamonds" from New York. Herkimer diamonds are beautifully doubly-terminated quartz crystals already "faceted" by nature—they are so called because of their near "adamantine" luster. The bedrock in which the crystals are found began forming approximately half a billion years ago in a shallow Cambrian sea found just south of the ancient Adirondack Mountains. The bedrock in which the crystals are found began forming approximately half a billion years ago in a shallow Cambrian sea found just south of the ancient Adirondack Mountains. The rough for the present stone was found in 2007 and was faceted by the prospector himself into this beautiful trillion-cut.
Weighing approximately 57.7 carats and measuring 27.0 x 28.0 x 17.0 mm
