Rare Double-star Blue Sapphire
Rare Double-star Blue Sapphire--A Published Gem
Sri Lanka
Polished as an oval cabochon with a high dome, this sapphire of classic Sri Lankan cornflower blue, possesses a very unusual form of asterism: when the stone is illuminated with a single point light source, two superimposed six-rayed stars appear. The rays of one star are almost parallel to, and just to the side of, the other.
Weighing approximately 38.56 carats and measuring 16.5 x 15.0 x 12.0mm
Sold for US$ 8,750 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • Accompanied by a copy of an article from Gems & Gemology, Fall 1993, in which the unusual double star sapphire was the subject of an article which explained the origin of its phenomenon.
