Footnotes

  • Betty Joel, aka Mary Stewart Lockhart, the daughter of art collector/British diplomat, Sir James Stewart Lockhart, was born in Hong Kong in 1896. Together with husband David Joel, this prolific English designer, founded Betty Joel Ltd. in 1918, specializing in furniture and integrated carpets, employing some of the basic tenets of good craftsmanship from the Arts & Crafts movement, tempered with an Orientalist eye and a naval manufacturing demeanor. Many of her carpet designs were produced in China. In the 1930's, the business moved to Knightsbridge, London and specialized in Moderne-influenced design. Her forward thinking work is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
