In part: "I did not at first realize that was your brother who had vanished in such tragic circumstances, & I want to tell you how deeply I feel for you in your grief and anxiety ... It is hard to believe that our unhappy land has become a lawless wilderness full of evil mysteries where in my youth all was so innocent and kindly."
