2 volumes. 4to (273 x 217 mm). xii, [16], 516; [2], 588 [i.e. 586] pp. Stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait by J. Heath after Joshua Reynolds; 2 engraved plates of facsimiles. Modern half calf in antique style over old marbled covers, period morocco spine labels preserved. Some toning and minor spotting throughout, pale browning to plates and endpapers, corner stain to portrait, tiny hole in text to 2D2 and 2H3 in vol 2.
Provenance: George Pflaumer (his sale, Sotheby's New York, June 3, 1997, lot 130).

FIRST EDITION of the seminal literary biography. This is the issue with "gve" reading on p 135, vol 1. 2M4 and 2N1 in vol 1 are cancels as is E3 in vol 2. Grolier English 131; Rothschild 463.
