Original gilt stamped illustrated buckram, imitation snakeskin endpapers. Boards soiled and stained, spine darkened and with a small tear, edges bumped.
Provenance: R[ichard] Lydekker (name inked to presentation leaf); the collection of Margie and Robert E. Petersen.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, INSCRIBED BY THE PUBLISHER: "Presentation Copy / No. 12 / With Kind Regards / Rowland Ward." The English naturalist Richard Lydekker's copy of "one of the rarest of all African big game hunting books" (Czech). Ward published several works on game animals by Lydekker, including The Great and Small Game of India, Burma, and Tibet (1900), The Game Animals of Africa (1908), and A Trip to Pilawin (1908), Lydekker's account of his visit to Count Potocki's deer park in Volhynia, Russia.
