4to (215 x 140 mm). With 64 double-page engraved maps. Large woodcut printers devices, historiated woodcut initials, geographical woodcuts in text. Later speckled calf, rebacked, raised bands, morocco label. Dampstaining to first gathering, a few leaves foxed, maps largely clean but with a 1.5 inch circular stain to map of Sardinia and Sicily, headline shaved on map of Natolia, early annotations to title, repair to head of spine.

"NEW AND IMPORTANT EDITION, WITH A NEW SERIES OF MAPS" (Sabin). The maps are slightly larger versions of Gastaldi's in the 1548 edition, but with the world map and the maps of Britain and Central America redrawn—the latter depicting the Yucatan as a peninsula—and with four maps not in the 1548 edition. Ten of the maps relate to America, including the "orbis pars" and "Carta Marina," both of which show North America joined to Asia; "Schonlandia Nuova," depicting Greenland as a part of Europe; "Tierra Nova" showing the northern continent and identifying La Florida; and a South American map depicting Castilla del Oro, Peru Provincia, and El Brasil. The present copy contains the "Discorso Universale" of Moleto which is sometimes lacking. Phillips 371; Sabin 66503.
