PTOLEMAEUS, CLAUDIUS.
SERVETUS, MICHAEL (VILLANOVANUS). 1511?-1553. Geographicae enarrationis, libri octo. Vienna and Lyons: Gaspar Trechsel for Hugues de La Porte, 1541.
Folio (390 x 267 mm). a-m6 n4 a-h6. 49 double-page woodcut maps and 1 single page map. Full-page woodcut armillary sphere by Albrecht Durer, large woodcut on title, woodcut decorative and historiated initials and numerous woodcuts in text. 18th century vellum, geometrical devices in blind to spine panels, covers centered with small quatrefoil in blind and floral devices in blind at corners, manuscript spine titles. Light spotting to index, soiling to covers, maps fine.
Provenance: two pages of 18th century? manuscript notes, being a copy of the entry for the present edition from Vogtii's Catalogus librorum rariorum, on rear endpapers; Charles Edward Armstrong (armorial bookplate).

Second Servetus edition. With four maps relating to America, viz, Tabula orbis; Norbergia et Gottia (depicting Greenland as a part of Norway); Tabula Nova totius orbis; and Tabula Novae Terra, with an account of the discoveries of Columbus on the back of this last. The maps were printed from the same blocks used in the 1522, 1525 and 1535 editions; the Latin text is by Willibald Pirckheimer, as edited and arranged by Servetus. Many of the maps were printed without the descriptive text found in the first Servetus edition (1535), which had been criticized as being hostile to Calvinism. "Many copies of this and of the 1535 edition are said to have been burnt by the orders of Calvin at the time of the execution of Servetus" (Sabin 66485). Meder 262 (Durer woodcut); Phillips 366.
