Tabula novarum insularum, quas diversis respectibus Occidentales & Indianas vocant. [Basle: 1550.] Woodcut map, 290 x 368 mm, vignettes hand-colored, Latin text on verso. Small ink-stain, margins toned. Matted and framed.

THE FIRST SEPARATE MAP OF THE AMERICAS AND THE FIRST MAP TO NAME THE PACIFIC OCEAN ("Mare pacificum"), it is also an influential map in determining the name "America" for the new continent and an early map to depict Japan ("Zipangri"). This map first appeared in 1540 in the Geographia but the denomination "Americam" was not added until its inclusion in the Cosmographiae of 1544. The large and decorative ship is Magellan's Victoria, the only vessel of five to survive his voyage; there is also an early named appearance of the Straits of Magellan. Burden 12, state 5.
