MERCATOR, GERHARD. 1512-1594.
PTOLEMAEUS, CLAUDIUS. Tabulae geographicae Orbis Terrarum veteribus cogniti. Utrecht: Francis Halmam and Franeker: Leonard Strik, 1695.
Folio (435 x 287 mm). Engraved allegorical title, index leaf with colophon on verso, and 28 double-page engraved maps. Recent morocco-backed marbled boards. First and last blanks wrinkled and chipped, a few maps slightly toned, very faint scattered spotting.
A fine example of Mercator's revision of Ptolemy's Geographia. The maps were originally engraved for the first edition of 1578; for the present edition the cartouches were altered and the border of the World map re-engraved with an allegorical motif. Comprising the world map "Universalis Tabula Juxta Ptolemaeum," five maps of Africa, twelve of Asia, and ten of Europe. Phillips 518; cf. Shirley 139.
