BORDONE, BENEDETTO. 1460-1531.
[World map. Venice, c.1534.] Woodcut map, 225 x 393 mm (to neatline), Italian caption and text on verso. Small repaired wormhole near center margin and repaired wormtrail in blank area at foot touch of soiling. Matted and framed.
Bordone's world mapone of a very few obtainable pre-Muenster world mapswas the most influential prototype of the oval projection. It is based on Rosselli's map of c.1508, but whereas Rosselli showed North America as part of Asia, Bordone leaves the west coast of both Americas undelineated. Japan is surprisingly well-located, an approximation based on Polo's textual account. Shirley 59.
