Period garnet morocco, heavily gilt decorated, a.e.g. Wanting first volume, plate of Balbec (Abbey's #79) with light spots, a few plates slightly cockled, joints, head and tail of spines, spine bands and corners rubbed.
FIRST EDITION, DELUXE HAND-COLORED ISSUE. Generally accepted as the finest illustrated work on the Near East, Major Abbey considered this set to be "one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey 385); Tooley 402.
