RALEIGH, SIR WALTER. 1552-1618.
The Discoverie of the Large, Rich and Bewtiful Empyre of Guiana, with a relation of the great and Golden Citie of Manoa (which the Spanyards call El Dorado) And of the Provinces of Emeria, Arromaia, Amapaia, and other Countries, with their rivers, adjoyning. London: Robert Robinson, 1596.
Small 4to (182 x 135 mm). A4 [P]4 B-P4. Woodcut ornament to title, occasional woodcut initials and headpieces. Old limp blindstamped vellum. Custom brown morocco box. Pale dampstain, final leaf P4 with marginal tears and a chip, wormtrack to inner blank margins of leaves B2-D1, binding soiled and with small tears, front free endpaper relaid, rear endpaper lacking.
Provenance: period gift inscription on front free endpaper: "RW ex dono SI" (a Raleigh association? see below); Sir Walter Oakeshott [1903-1987] (ownership inscription).

FIRST EDITION, THIRD ISSUE OF RALEIGH'S ACCOUNT OF HIS SEARCH FOR "EL DORADO." There were three issues of this work, all printed in 1596. This is the rare third issue with p 21 reading "Nueuo reyno de Granada," p 60, line 12 starting "it, there" and the variant spelling "Empyre" on line 5 and "Citie" on line 6 of title-page.
Walter Oakeshott was for some years Rector of Lincoln College and a scholar in multiple disciplines. He appears to refer to the present volume in his article "Sir Walter Ralegh's Library" (in The Library, 1968) as one that may be associated with Raleigh with an ex dono cipher possibly in his hand. Alden & Landis 596/85; Church 254 ("third edition"); ESTC S110580; Sabin 67554; STC 20636.
