ILLUMINATED CALENDAR LEAF.
Illuminated manuscript on vellum, [Northern France, mid or late 15th century]. Single leaf from the Calendar section, the start of the month of November, 19 lines, red, blue and gold inks, gothic bookhand, written space 105 x 88 mm, 4 one-line and 1 two-line initials in pink, blue, white and gold, and THREE MINIATURES in burnished gold frames: on the recto a scene of a peasant knocking acorns from a tree to feed a group of pigs, and a portrait of Sagittarius with bow out-stretched; and on the verso a hunting dog retrieving a bird with chateaux in the background. Some finger-soiling and toning, a touch of flaking and rubbing to paint.
