Two San Francisco exhibitions became major influences on the Six. The Civic Auditorium held an exhibition of contemporary French art in 1923, followed by the California Palace of the Legion of Honor's Inaugural Exposition of French Art in 192425. These shows helped cultivate an interest in the choppy plein-air brushwork of the Impressionists and the bright colors of the Fauves, which can be seen quite vividly in Three Fishing Boats.
