Also called the tundra mammoth, this species of mammoth still roamed the earth up to 10,000 years ago and is known from bones and frozen carcasses from northern North America and northern Eurasia. They are perhaps the most well known species of mammoth. The present tooth, with its clearly exposed root structure, was found in the late 1960s and still retains the appearance of being "fresh".
