Two blue and white porcelain bowls
19th century
The first thinly potted with a shallow curving well, raised on a short foot and painted around the exterior walls with the Three Friends of Winter; the second, manufactured in China for the Vietnamese market, potted with a wide curving well supported on a short foot and painted around its exterior walls with two dragons chasing flaming pearls amid clouds, the recessed base bearing the Thieu-tri nen-che mark in Chinese regular script.
4 1/2 and 6 3/4in (11.5cm and 17cm) diameters

  • The Vietnamese emperor Thieu-tri, whose name is inscribed on the second bowl, reigned from 1841-1847.
