An English double barreled flintlock fowling gun by John Knubley
fourth quarter 18th century
Not serialized, 20 gauge. The 41 inch brown Damascus side-by-side barrels with silver fore-sight and signed at the breeches Knebley (sic) No. 11/Charing Cross London. Gold-lined touch holes. Engraved, signed and casehardened locks with roller-mounted springs and fire-blued screws. Blued and engraved triggerguard with pineapple finial, the bow inlaid with vacant heart-shaped silver escutcheon. Figured walnut half-stock with finely checkered wrist, the fore-end with engraved silver wedge escutcheons. Brass tipped ramrod. Together with leather accessory pouch containing touch hole pick, screwdriver, powder dispenser and extra flints.
Condition: Excellent as redone. Barrels with rebrowned finish showing scattered minor pitting. Locks rebuilt and refinished by Peter Dyson. Reblued triggerguard. One wedge escutcheon a replacement. Stock refinished.
