A US surcharged French Model 1766 Charleville flintlock musket
The 45 inch .72 caliber barrel with rectangular bayonet lug under the muzzle and marked at the breech M-. Lockplate marked with crown over D above a faint Charleville; tail stamped US. Steel furniture of standard pattern, the lower barrel banded fitted with the M. 1773 spring. Walnut stock, the right side of the buttstock incised IC/-E partially covered by an old brass plate inscribed with an apparently apocryphal provenance: Taken from the French by the British/at Quebec Sept 13th 1759/from the British by the Americans/at Montreal Nov. 12th 1775/then carried through the War of 1812.
Condition: Very good. Metal with mottled grey patina showing areas of light pitting. Front sling swivel missing. Stock showing numerous marks and bruises, sliver missing from left rear edge of fore-end but otherwise basically sound.
