A uniform ensemble for a Sergeant Instructor of the Fifeshire Volunteer Mounted Rifles
circa 1860-70
Comprising: 1) Black leather helmet with silvered and gilt regimental frontplate above a riband with the regimental motto and monogram. White horsehair plume, the silvered and gilt base in the form of a four pointed star. Leather-backed chinscales. Retaining part of detached liner. 2) Red wool tunic piped in blue; white metal buttons with regimental monogram; right sleeve with silver bullion sergeants stripes with a four-pointed star above indicating Sergeant Instructor and three stars below indicating 30 years of service.
Condition: 1) Showing some crazing to surface of leather, the seams with some separation. Losses to silvered finish. 2) Showing some light staining and scattered moth holes.

  • Note: Formed in 1860 from the Royal Fife Yeomanry Cavalry, the unit was reorganized in 1870 as the 1st Fifeshire Light Horse Volunteer Corps. The present example is possibly a bandsman's uniform.
