An early Federal Period cheesebox canteen
The cylindrical wooden canteen with old and possibly original dark matte green painted finish on the sides and back; the front and back with narrow red border stripes; the front freely painted in gold and black with a Federal eagle on a dark green (?) ground, the shield with red stripes. Sides fitted with three narrow leather suspension straps (one broken), the back with one complete and one partial leather waistbelt straps. Simple aperture with old corncob stopper.
Condition: Minor hairline cracks; paint on front very dark and showing curdling and some small chips.
