An etched Italian buckler in 16th century style
The circular, convex steel shield having a 4 1/2 inch central spike molded with scrollwork and heavy roped border turned under. The surfaced etched in Pisan style with leafy meander on a granulated ground; the central panel incorporating grotesque masks and enclosed by eleven radiating bands etched with meander and birds within guilloche borders and a single band etched with a crowned cartouche containing a standing figure; this within an etched and guttered outer border fitted with steel-headed lining rivets. Reverse retains an old leather liner, not attached to the rivets, and all of one leather strap and most of the other.
Condition: Very good. Showing a mottled patina with some light pitting and generally sharp decoration.
