A Federal Period officer's saber retailed by B.& J. Cooper of New York
first quarter 19th century
Curved 31 inch blade with broad, shallow fuller and 12 inch panel engraved and gilt with conventional motifs and riband inscribed B.& J. Cooper, N.Y. Iron stirrup hilt retaining old tan painted finish. Grooved wooded grip. Blackened iron two-ring scabbard.
Condition: Blade with mottled patina showing patches of spotting/light pitting and retaining areas of gilding and some very slight traces of blued finish. Hilt with dark patina and perhaps 60% painted finish. Grip with scattered chipping but sound. Scabbard with one or two shallow dents, missing the lower ring and retaining much of the blackened finish.
