A deluxe presentation U.S. Model 1860 staff & field officer's sword
Of French manufacture; 30 inch blade of diamond section with 14 inch panel etched with florals and panoplies of arms, the ricasso with the maker's mark of Francois Delacour & Backes of Paris; gilt brass hilt of standard pattern, the folding counterguard with presentation inscription Col. Frank Gallen/Presented/By his Providence FRIENDS/May 29, 1877; mother-of-pearl gripscales; nickeled scabbard, the gilt brass mounts pierced with florals. Retaining old red and white silk festoon/sword knot.
Condition: Blade with smooth, mottled grey patina; hilt retains 50-60% gilt finish; one gripscale with some very minor chipping above ferrule; scabbard showing light marks, the mounts with 35-45% gilt finish.
